Anton LaVey Founding Figure
Anton Szandor LaVey (April 11, 1930 – October 29, 1997), born Howard Stanton Levey, was the founder of the Church of Satan as well as a writer, occultist, and musician. He was the author of The Satanic Bible and the founder of LaVeyan Satanism, a synthesized system of his understanding of human nature and the insights of philosophers who advocated materialism and individualism, for which he claimed no supernatural or theistic inspiration. LaVey was born as Howard Stanton Levey in Chicago, Illinois to a Jewish family. His father, Michael Joseph Levey (1903-1992), from Chicago, Illinois married Lavey's mother, Gertrude Augusta Coultron who was born to a Russian father and Ukrainian mother who had immigrated to Ohio in 1893; both became naturalized American citizens in 1900. According to his biography, however, his ancestry includes Georgian, French, Russian, Ukrainian, Alsatian, German, and Romanian. LaVey's family moved to California, where he spent his early life in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Globe, Arizona. His parents supported his musical interests, as he tried a number of instruments; his favorites were keyboards such as the pipe organ and the calliope.

1. Church of Satan
The Church of Satan is a religious organization dedicated to the philosophy of LaVeyan Satanism as codified in The Satanic Bible. The Church of Satan was established at the Black House in San Francisco, California, on Walpurgisnacht, April 30, 1966, by Anton Szandor LaVey, who was the church's High Priest until his death in 1997. In 2001, Peter H. Gilmore became the high priest, and the church's headquarters were moved to Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan. The Church of Satan describes its structural basis as a cabal that is "...maintained as an underground cell-system of individuals who share the basis of [our] philosophy". Membership to the Church of Satan is available on two levels: registered membership and active membership. Registered members are simply those who choose to affiliate on a formal level by filing out the required information and sending a one time registration fee of two-hundred dollars, wherein an individual will receive an "...embossed crimson card" declaring them a member of the Church of Satan. Active membership is available for those who wish to take a more active role in the organization, and is subject to the completion of a more comprehensive application.
