José Pedro Varela Politician
José Pedro Varela (19 March 1845 - 24 October 1879) was an Uruguayan sociologist, journalist and politician. He was born in Montevideo. Uruguay adopted free, compulsory, and secular education in 1876, thanks to the efforts of educator Jose Pedro Varela, who was only president for two short years, 1875-76. It was because of Varela that Uruguay established the 1877 Law of Common Education, which has continued to influence Uruguay even in the new millennium.
