Shankar Bidari(Kannada:ಶಂಕರ್ ಬಿದರಿ) was the former Director general of police of the state of Karnataka. He was also the Commissioner of Police of Bangalore city. He is an Indian Police Service officer of 1978 batch. Bidari hails from Bidari village in Bagalkot District, Karnataka. He is credited with spearheading the Special Task Force operation againist the then dreaded forest Brigand Veerappan which weakened his once sophisticated gang by reducing its force of around 160 members to 5 men. In March 2012, the Karnataka High Court declared as "void and illegal" the appointment of Shankar Bidari as state Director General of Police, describing him as "worse than Saddam Hussain or Muammar Gaddafi" for alleged atrocities committed by his Special Task Force, during the hunt for Veerappan. Shankar Bidari's family has a distinction of having five civil servants from a single family of six members. Bidari's daughter Vijayalakshmi Bidari,IAS topped the Civil Services Examination for the year 2001. Her husband Mallikarjuna Prasanna, an IPS officer is a DCP in Mumbai. His son Vijayendra Bidari, an IPS officer is the current Superintendent of Police of Tirunelveli.
