Surya Paloh Politician

Surya Dharma Paloh (born 16 July 1951 in Kutaraja, Aceh) is an Indonesian media tycoon who owns the Media Indonesia daily newspaper and Metro TV, a 24-hour international news television network. Surya Paloh is active in politics and he is the Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Golkar Party, the biggest political party in Indonesia. He is also the founder of National Democrat mass organization, which later gave birth to the Nasdem Party (Partai Nasional Demokrat).

Metro TV is Indonesia's first 24-hour news channel, based in West Jakarta. The station was established on 25 November 2000 and now has over 53 transmission sites all over the country. It is owned by Surya Paloh who also owns the Media Indonesia daily. These two, along with other newspapers distributed in different parts of Indonesia, are part of the Media Group and TV Tokyo Network, also owned by Paloh. It is the only TV station to offer Mandarin news and no sinetron programs in Indonesia, although recently the station has also begun to broadcast entertainment and multicultural programs such as the tech show "e-Lifestyle," the satirical news and current affairs show "Republik Mimpi", musical programming such as Musik + and Idenesia, and other special or regional programming.

Golkar was the ruling party from 1973 to 1999, under Suharto's New Order regime and the brief presidency of B. J. Habibie. The Nasdem Party is the Corporatist political party in Indonesia. It is partly funded by media mogul Surya Paloh who founded the similarly named organization, Nasional Demokrat. Despite this, and logo similarity, Nasional Demokrat has insisted that it is not linked with the party.
